screenwriter write film cinema synopsis contest

Try answering the following questions about your movie. If you're lucky, you'll end up with an outline you can turn into a synopsis!

I generally like to generate three to six possible outlines for each logline, to make sure I've covered all the angles.

Help

Answer the following as best you can. I'll use Thelma and Louise as an example to help you along, because I'm familiar with it (if you haven't seen it, don't worry, it's just to give the idea).

Act I

1.Who is your main character (or characters)?
A housewife and a waitress bored out of their skulls.

2.What do they do, or witness, or what happens to them set your movie in motion?
They go on a weekend getaway.

3.What do they start to do because of it?
They start to loosen up and act like they did before they had responsibilities.

4.What goes wrong or what do they discover that complicates the plot further?
Thelma almost gets raped by a guy she was dancing with and Louise shoots him.

Act II, first half

Now try the same questions again, but considering what has happened.

1.Who is your main character (or characters)?
A couple of gals with a big problem who have to decide what to do.

2.What do they do, or witness, or what happens to them set your movie in motion?
They decide to run, afraid no one will believe their story and Louise will go to jail.

3.What do they start to do because of it?
They start to drive to Mexico.

4.What goes wrong or what do they discover that complicates the plot further?
They have no money.

Act II 2nd half

Okay, boys and girls, let's try it again!

1.Who is your main character (or characters)?
A couple of gals on the run, being sought by the police.

2.What do they do, or witness, or what happens to them set your movie in motion?
Louise calls her boyfriend to send money and they meet a cute hitchhiker.

3.What do they start to do because of it?
While waiting, they take stock. Thelma decides to run with Louise rather than return to her nowhere life.

4.What goes wrong or what do they discover that complicates the plot further?
Boyfriend shows up with the money but the hitchhiker steals it.

Act III

One more time, with feeling. Remember, this leads up to the end of the movie!

1.Who is your main character (or characters)?
Two fugitives without money or options.

2.What do they do, or witness, or what happens to them set your movie in motion?
Thelma holds up a convenience store and the cops find out where they are.

3.What do they start to do because of it?
Make for the border, but avoiding Texas because Louise had a bad experience there she won't talk about.

4.What goes wrong or what do they discover that complicates the plot further?
They get chased to the edge of the Grand Canyon.

And finally, your BIG FINISH

4.How does he/she (they) solve this problem?
They go over the edge rather than submit to so-called justice.

NOTE: A strong climax is always caused by something the main character does, rather than something a secondary character does or something that happens over which they have no control.

Ok, now let's see your movie outline!

Option A:  Click the button below. This gives you an easy to cut-and-paste form containing what you typed in above. However, it also sends a copy to me so I can track how the site is being used. I delete all messages sent this way - I'm not in this to steal outlines, either. But if you're not comfortable with this, use Option B.

Option B: Cut and paste what you've entered above into a word processor, but don't click the button.
